Waves and Its Types

Q.7. (a) Explain the term wave. What are two types of waves?
        (b) What are different type of mechanical waves?

Ans. (a) Waves

Waves are the means to transport energy from one place to another

Definitions:

The periodic disturbance spreading all around inside a medium is said to form a wave. The wave can be generated by the help of certain oscillator.

i       Water waves are generated by dippin a rod and then taking it out of water periodically, inside water.

ii.      String waves are generated by oscillating one end of long uniform sting whose othe end is attached with hook as shown i

Types of Waves:

There are two types of waves.

A)  Mechanical Waves:

The waves which required any medium for their propagation are called mechanical waves,
Examples: Water waves, sound waves, String waves are mechanical waves.

B)  Electromagnetic Waves:

The waves which don't require any medium for their propagation are electromagnetic waves.
The X-ray, light waves, radio waves and T.V waves are example of electromagnetic waves.

a) Types of Mechanical Waves:

There are Two types of mechanical waves:

i.  Longitudinal Waves.
ii.  Transverse Waves.

Longitudinal Waves:

The waves in which direction of oscillation are along the direction of waves are called longitudinal / Congressional waves

These waves have compression's and rarefaction.
the examples of such waves are sound waves and waves and in slinky spring.
These waves have compression and rarefaction.

Transverse Waves:

The waves in which direction of oscillations is perpendicular to the direction of propagation of waves is called transverse waves.

Example are water waves, waves on string and light waves. These waves have crests and troughs
